Best Porsche Tracker: The Thatcham S5 Insurance Guide

Porsche Macan

If your insurer or broker has asked for a Thatcham approved tracker on your Porsche, the system they have most likely asked for is a Thatcham Category S5 tracker. We supply and fit two: the Meta Trak S5 Tracker, from £295, and the ScorpionTrack S5, from £375, both including installation. Either one will comply with an insurer's request for an S5 tracker, and each has its own strengths, so the choice is yours.

An S5 tracker is essentially a recovery product, not a theft prevention product. If theft prevention matters to you as well, we recommend the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK, from £469 supply and installation. It is a combined system, including both a Thatcham S5 tracker and an advanced engine immobiliser, so it offers both recovery and theft prevention. This guide explains why insurers ask for an S5 tracker, how having one fitted by us compares with buying Porsche's own system through the dealer, and how to choose.

Why insurers ask Porsche owners for a Thatcham S5 tracker

It comes down to value. Insurers set their security requirements largely on what a car is worth, because that is what they pay out if it is stolen and never recovered. On a car of Porsche value, a Thatcham Category S5 tracker is a common condition of cover, and it is the most frequent reason Porsche owners get in touch with us. A tracker lets a monitoring centre locate the car and work with the police to get it back, and a recovered car is a far smaller claim than a lost one.

Theft numbers point the same way. Thatcham Research and NaVCIS figures reported by Fleet News put vehicle theft insurance claims at £640 million in 2024, and found that 52 percent of recovered stolen vehicles were premium or luxury brands. Organised crime does not steal a Porsche on impulse, it steals it to order, and it has the tools to do it.

How a modern Porsche actually gets stolen

Four methods account for almost all of it, and none of them involve breaking a window.

  • Relay attack. Two people, two devices. One stands near your house and picks up the signal from your key, the other stands at the car and repeats it. The car believes the key is present. Doors open, engine starts.
  • Key cloning. A device plugged into the car's diagnostic socket programs a blank key in under a minute. The thief then drives away with what the car regards as a legitimate key, and can come back for it later.
  • OBD port attack. The diagnostic port under the dashboard is a direct line into the vehicle's electronics. Thieves use it to gain access to the vehicle's CAN network and steal the vehicle by digital means.
  • CAN bus injection. The newest of the four. The thief does not need to get inside the car at all. They access the vehicle's CAN network from outside the vehicle and inject a message telling the car that a valid key has been presented.

These are not fringe techniques. The Crime and Policing Act 2026 specifically criminalised the possession, import, manufacture and sale of relay tools, CAN bus injection devices, signal jammers and key emulators, and Thatcham Research noted when it took effect in April 2026 that the burden of proving legitimate use now falls on the individual holding the device. Legislation does not usually arrive ahead of a problem.

Why the factory security does not stop any of it

Every new car sold in the UK since October 1998 has a factory fitted Thatcham Category 2 immobiliser. Your Porsche has one. It is well engineered and it is not broken. It is also, in every one of the four attacks above, completely bypassed, and the reason is structural rather than a fault in the part.

The factory fitted immobiliser is original equipment. It is wired into the vehicle from build, interconnected with the vehicle's communication network, and in constant contact with the manufacturer's own electronic systems. That interconnection is exactly what makes it vulnerable.

Follow the sequence. The thief exploits a factory security vulnerability. The vehicle's own electronics are told that a valid key or signal is present. Those electronics instruct the factory fitted immobiliser to disarm. And it obeys, because the instruction arrived from systems it was built to trust. It does not fail. It obeys.

An aftermarket immobiliser is not in that conversation. It is fitted after the car was built, it is not wired into the manufacturer's security architecture, and it runs its own encrypted authentication. A factory exploit does not reach it. There is a second advantage as well: factory security is standardised, so a single exploit scales across a whole model range, while an aftermarket system is not. A thief cannot know which system is fitted or where it has been placed, so they would have to defeat both at once with no ready made tool for the second. In practice they move to an easier target.

None of this is a criticism of the Thatcham Category 2 standard. A Category 2 immobiliser fitted in the aftermarket would be effective for precisely the same reason. The problem is the interconnection, not the category. If you want the full version of that argument, it is set out in our complete guide to vehicle immobilisers, and the CAN bus injection route is worked through in detail in our post on why a factory immobiliser will not stop CAN bus injection.

Porsche's own tracking system, and the alternative

On many new models, Porsche no longer fits a tracking system from the factory. What it offers instead is the Car Security Package, which Porsche's own UK support site states is "also called Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (PVTS)". It is operated by Vodafone Automotive, and Vodafone Automotive's own user guide for the Porsche system confirms it is Thatcham accredited in the S5 category. Porsche also notes that buyers can download an activation certificate "which you may need for insurance purposes".

So it is a genuine Thatcham S5 system, bought through the supplying dealer. What we offer is a more cost effective alternative: a Thatcham S5 accredited system, supplied and fitted by us for a one off payment:

Meta Trak S5 Tracker, from £295 supply and installation. Add your first subscription term at checkout: 1 year at £189.95, or 3 years at £499.95.

ScorpionTrack S5, from £375 supply and installation. You choose and pay for your subscription directly with ScorpionTrack after installation.

Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK, tracker and immobiliser, from £469 supply and installation, on the same subscription terms as the Meta Trak S5 Tracker.

We are not going to tell you that a Porsche Centre does a worse job of fitting than we do. What we will tell you is what we are: a business that fits vehicle security and nothing else, to Thatcham S5 accredited systems, at your home or your workplace anywhere in the UK, usually in an estimated 2 to 5 days. Ask your dealer for their price, compare it with ours, and decide for yourself.

The honest part: what a tracker does and does not do

A tracker does not prevent theft. It aids recovery. If your Porsche is taken, a Thatcham Category S5 system lets a monitoring centre locate it and work with the police to get it back. Thatcham's own product definitions put it plainly: the purpose of an assessed Vehicle Tracking System is "to detect unauthorised use of a protected vehicle and increasing the probability of the recovery of a stolen vehicle". Recovery, not prevention.

That is also exactly why insurers care about it. A recovered car is a reduced payout, so a tracker lowers their exposure. It does not lower yours in the way most people assume when they fit one. You still lose the car for days or weeks, you still deal with the claim, and if it comes back it may come back stripped.

Which is why, on a car of this value, we always recommend the combined tracker and immobiliser rather than the tracker alone, whatever your insurer has strictly asked for. The tracker gets it back. The immobiliser is the part that stops it leaving.

What we recommend for a Porsche

If your insurer has asked for an S5 tracker

We fit two Thatcham S5 trackers, and either one will comply with an insurer's request for an S5 tracker. Both are Thatcham Category S5 accredited and both are monitored 24/7.

  • Meta Trak S5 Tracker, from £295 supply and installation. Your first subscription term is chosen at checkout and included in what you pay us. Covered by Meta Trak's lifetime parts and labour warranty, for the original owner with an active subscription.
  • ScorpionTrack S5, from £375 supply and installation. You choose and pay for your subscription directly with ScorpionTrack after installation. Covered by ScorpionTrack's 2 year manufacturer warranty.

Each has its pros and cons, so it comes down to which suits you. Our ScorpionTrack S5 buyer's guide and our complete Thatcham S5 tracker buyer's guide go through them in detail, or call us on 0330 133 3990 and we will talk you through it.

If you want theft prevention

Step up to a tracker and immobiliser. The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK is from £469 supply and installation and combines a Thatcham S5 tracker with an advanced engine immobiliser, giving you both recovery and theft prevention. Because that immobiliser does not take its instructions from the factory communication network, it blocks the start attempt whatever the vehicle's electronics have been told, and whichever route the attack came in by: relay, key cloning, the diagnostic port, or a message injected into the CAN network from outside the vehicle. The system includes a Thatcham CAT2E accredited immobiliser, which you can read more about in our Thatcham Category 2E guide.

For most Porsche owners, this is the system. It is the one we would fit to our own car. If your Porsche has an electrified powertrain, the E-TEC below is the recommended system.

If your Porsche is a hybrid or fully electric

If your vehicle has an electrified powertrain, whether mild hybrid (MHEV), plug in hybrid (PHEV) or fully electric, the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC is the recommended combined S5 tracker and immobiliser system, from £599 supply and installation. It uses a dual circuit immobiliser with its own software, built to immobilise a vehicle's start stop button. It is unique within the Meta Trak range, and it is accredited to both Thatcham Category 2 and CAT2E.

There is one caveat. If your vehicle can be driven without pressing the start button, so you get in and can put it into drive with "Ready" showing on the dash without pressing start, you will need the standard Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK rather than the E-TEC. This is normally only seen on fully electric Porsche models. If in doubt, call us on 0330 133 3990 and we will confirm. The standard Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK can be fitted to any powertrain on any manufacturer and model, so there is no version of this where you are left without an option.

If you want the maximum protection

The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK PRO, from £599 supply and installation, is for customers wanting the maximum protection for their vehicle. It adds remote OBD port immobilisation on top of the DEADLOCK, preventing connection and communication through the diagnostic port itself, which stops injected software damaging ECUs, data being taken, and new keys being coded through that port.

If your Porsche has an electrified powertrain, we suggest the E-TEC rather than the PRO. The E-TEC immobilises the start button, so the vehicle's ignition cannot be switched on, and the OBD port protection the PRO adds is not required.

If you only want an immobiliser

Some owners already have tracking they are happy with, or simply do not want a subscription. In that case the Meta AUTOBLOK is the one to fit, at £349 supply and installation. It is a standalone engine immobiliser with no subscription of any kind. Bear in mind it does not track, so it protects the car without helping you recover it if it does go.

How buying works

  1. Choose your system on the product page. For Meta Trak tracking systems, you select your first subscription term, 1 year or 3 years, and it is included in what you pay us at checkout. When that term ends, renewals are paid directly to Meta Trak. For the ScorpionTrack S5, you choose and pay for your subscription directly with ScorpionTrack after installation. The Meta AUTOBLOK has no subscription at all.
  2. We contact you to arrange the fit. Installation is UK wide and comes to you, at home or at work, in an estimated 2 to 5 days. We never state a guaranteed date before we have spoken to you.
  3. An engineer fits the system, and on completion of the installation it is tested to make sure it is fully functioning correctly.
  4. The certificate of installation your insurer will ask for is emailed to you by the product manufacturer after activation. Sometimes it can also be found in the manufacturer's app.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my insurer asked for a Thatcham S5 tracker on my Porsche?

Because of the car's value. Insurers set security requirements largely on what a car is worth, and on a car of Porsche value a Thatcham Category S5 tracker is a common condition of cover. A tracker helps the monitoring centre and the police recover the car if it is stolen, which reduces what the insurer has to pay out.

Does my Porsche already have a tracker fitted?

Possibly, but do not assume it. On many new models, Porsche no longer fits a tracking system from the factory. It offers the Car Security Package, which its UK support site also calls the Porsche Vehicle Tracking System, or PVTS. It is a subscription service operated by Vodafone Automotive and it has to be active to do anything. If it was never taken up, or the subscription has lapsed, the car has no tracking. Check your Porsche Connect account before you buy anything.

Can I fit a Meta Trak or ScorpionTrack S5 tracker instead of Porsche's own system?

Yes. Porsche's own Car Security Package is a Thatcham S5 system bought through the supplying dealer. The Meta Trak S5 Tracker, from £295, and the ScorpionTrack S5, from £375, are both Thatcham Category S5 accredited, both will comply with an insurer's request for an S5 tracker, and both are a more cost effective alternative, supplied and fitted at your home or work.

Will an S5 tracker from you satisfy my insurer?

Every tracking system we fit is Thatcham Category S5 accredited and accepted by UK insurers that require a Thatcham S5 tracker. Thatcham's own category for this is Category S5, Vehicle Tracking Systems, which some insurers refer to as S5 VTS, meaning Vehicle Tracking System. Your certificate of installation is emailed to you by the product manufacturer after activation. If your policy wording asks for something specific, send it to us before you order and we will tell you plainly whether what we fit meets it.

Which tracker and immobiliser suits my Porsche?

If your Porsche has an electrified powertrain, whether mild hybrid, plug in hybrid or fully electric, the Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK E-TEC is the recommended system. The exception is a vehicle that can be put into drive with "Ready" on the dash without pressing the start button, which is normally only seen on fully electric models. That vehicle needs the standard Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK, which can be fitted to any powertrain on any manufacturer and model. If in doubt, call us on 0330 133 3990 and we will confirm.

Do I need an immobiliser as well as a tracker?

If your insurer has asked only for a tracker, then strictly no. But a tracker does not prevent theft, it aids recovery, and on a car of this value we would always recommend the combined tracker and immobiliser as the real protection. The aftermarket immobiliser is the part that stops the car being driven away in the first place, because it does not take its instructions from the factory communication network the thief has compromised.

How long does installation take and where is it done?

Supply and installation is UK wide in an estimated 2 to 5 days, and our engineer comes to you, at home or at work. The fit itself is usually a few hours. We arrange the appointment with you after your order and we do not commit to a date before we have spoken to you.
