Yes, you can buy car trackers sold as "no subscription". The catch is that the cost of sending location data has not gone away: it is usually built into the purchase price, and none of these devices is monitored around the clock or accepted by an insurer that asks for a Thatcham tracker. The lowest cost tracker we supply is the Meta Trak Pulsar, from £225 with its first 3 years of service included, and the only product we fit with genuinely nothing to pay after installation is an immobiliser, the Meta AUTOBLOK, at £349.
Below we explain why a tracker needs a subscription at all, what the "no subscription" devices leave out, what happens on any system when the subscription stops, and the cheapest options we fit at each level of protection.
Why car trackers need a subscription
The easiest way to think about a tracker is as a mobile phone. You pay once for the handset, which here is the tracking device fitted to your car. Then you pay for an airtime plan, which is the subscription, so the device can send its data over the mobile network.
That data has somewhere to go. On every tracker it goes to your app, and through the manufacturer's own systems. On a Thatcham S7 or S5 system it also goes to a monitoring centre, whose staff handle the theft response and work with the police on recovery. So the subscription is paying for two things: the ongoing communication, and on S7 and S5 systems, the people watching for a theft and helping to get the car back.
A tracker that never reports its position would need no plan, but it would also be no use to you. Anything that can show you where your car is has a communication cost somewhere.
What "no subscription" trackers usually are
Search for a car tracker with no monthly fee and you will mostly find two kinds of device.
Bluetooth tags. Small item finders built to locate keys and bags. They have no GPS receiver or SIM card of their own and only report a position when a compatible phone passes close enough to pick them up. In a theft, the person carrying the phone is the thief.
GPS trackers with the data paid up front. These have their own SIM, but the communication cost is folded into the price you pay at the start, much like topping up a pay as you go SIM. When the included data or period runs out, you top up or buy a new plan. Data allowances on these devices are often tight, which limits how frequently the device can report.
What they usually do not include
These devices can be useful for keeping an eye on something. What matters before you rely on one for your car is what they do not come with:
- No professional installation. You fit it yourself, and no installer tests it or confirms it is working.
- No Thatcham accreditation. Thatcham Research's product definitions require both Category S5 and Category S7 systems to be monitored 24/7 to BS 8591 Category 1 or an equivalent standard, with a back-up battery and resistance to attack for at least two minutes. Category S5 adds a driver identification device, a roaming SIM and GPS.
- Not accepted where an insurer asks for a Thatcham tracker. Without accreditation there is no certificate of installation to send your insurer.
- No 24/7 monitoring or recovery support. Alerts come to your phone, and if you are asleep or abroad nobody else acts on them.
- Often no full app. Some offer little more than a last known position.

What happens when a subscription stops
This is true of every brand, not just the ones we fit. Without an active subscription, a tracking system cannot communicate over the mobile network, so it cannot operate. Where the tracker and an immobiliser are combined in one system, the immobiliser stops working too. On a Meta Trak system, that means the immobiliser in every DEADLOCK variant.
A lapse does not cost you the Meta Trak warranty: once the subscription is reactivated, Meta Trak's lifetime parts and labour warranty for the original owner applies again. Your insurance is the bigger risk. If your policy depends on a working tracker, letting the subscription lapse can leave you outside its terms, so read the condition before deciding not to renew.
The lowest cost options we fit
If keeping the running cost down is the priority, here is how our range steps up, from the cheapest tracker to full protection. For what each system costs over 1 and 3 years, see our car tracker cost guide.
1. Self monitored: Meta Trak Pulsar and Meta Trak Shield
The Meta Trak Pulsar is the cheapest tracker we supply. It is battery powered and wireless, costs £225 to fit yourself or £305 with professional installation, and its first 3 year service term, covering SIM data and app access, is included in the price. After that, a further 3 years is £129.95, paid directly to Meta Trak. It carries a 3 year parts and labour warranty, and it sits alongside our other wireless trackers. Our battery powered tracker guide covers how it reports and how long the batteries last.
The Meta Trak Shield is a hardwired tracker from £225 supply and installation. You choose its first term at checkout, £75.95 for 1 year or £209.95 for 3 years, and renew directly with Meta Trak after that. It gives live tracking, journey history and movement alerts in the Meta Trak app.
Both are self monitored. You see the car in your app, but there is no 24/7 theft monitoring and no recovery support, and neither meets an insurer's request for a Thatcham tracker.
2. Monitored theft response: Thatcham S7
The next step is a Thatcham S7 system. Thatcham S7 tracking systems feature 24/7 monitoring and professional theft support. We fit two, and they are equal choices. The Meta Trak S7 is from £185 supply and installation, with the first term chosen at checkout at £119.95 for 1 year or £329.95 for 3 years, then renewed with Meta Trak. The ScorpionTrack S7 is £185 supply and installation; we take no subscription for it, and you choose and pay for your plan directly with ScorpionTrack after installation.
3. The Thatcham S5 Tracker range
If your policy names a Thatcham S5 tracker, again there are two equal choices that will satisfy it. The Meta Trak S5 Tracker is from £295 supply and installation, with the first term at checkout at £189.95 for 1 year or £499.95 for 3 years. The ScorpionTrack S5 is £375 supply and installation, with the subscription arranged directly with ScorpionTrack. Our ScorpionTrack S5 buyer's guide goes through how that system works. Your policy wording decides which category you need, so check it, or send it to us, before ordering. You can browse all our Thatcham S5 trackers.
4. Genuinely no subscription: Meta AUTOBLOK
The one product we fit with nothing at all to pay after installation is not a tracker. The Meta AUTOBLOK is an engine immobiliser, £349 supply and installation, with no subscription and a 3 year warranty. It arms itself and will not let the engine start unless one of its two driver recognition tags is present, set up for proximity or a button press. The Meta AUTOBLOK operates independently of the vehicle's factory electronics, so the engine will not start without its ID tag. It does not track the car, so it will not help find it and will not satisfy a policy that asks for a tracker.

The real protection: tracker and immobiliser together
Every tracker above, however much it costs to run, is a recovery tool. It tells you, or a monitoring centre, where the car has gone. It does not stop the car going. That is why we recommend pairing tracking with an immobiliser whenever the budget allows.
The Meta Trak S5 DEADLOCK, priced from £469 for supply and installation, puts both in one system. Its subscription costs the same as the Meta Trak S5 Tracker's, so the difference is in the fitted price, not the running cost. Its immobiliser does not take instructions from the car's factory CAN bus, so the start attempt is refused whatever the car's own electronics have been told, including after relay attacks, key cloning and CAN injection. That matters because the factory fitted immobiliser every UK car has had since October 1998 trusts those same electronics, a weakness our car immobiliser guide covers in full. The system includes a Thatcham CAT2E accredited immobiliser, explained in our Category 2E guide, and is covered by Meta Trak's lifetime parts and labour warranty (original owner, active subscription). See every tracker and immobiliser system we fit.
How buying works
You order online. For Meta Trak tracking systems you choose the first subscription term at checkout and renew with Meta Trak afterwards; for ScorpionTrack you set up the plan with ScorpionTrack once the system is fitted; the AUTOBLOK needs no plan. Fitting is UK wide at your home, workplace, or even at the dealership before collection of the vehicle, in an estimated 2 - 5 days. After fitting, the system is tested to confirm it is fully functioning. For Thatcham systems, the certificate of installation is emailed by the product manufacturer after activation, and can sometimes also be found in the manufacturer's app.

Frequently asked questions
Why do car trackers need a subscription?
Because a tracker works like a mobile phone. The device is the handset and the subscription is the airtime plan that lets it send data over the mobile network to your app and the manufacturer. On Thatcham S7 and S5 systems it also pays for a monitoring centre that handles theft response and recovery. Without that plan the tracker has no way to report where the car is.
Can I get a car tracker with no subscription?
You can buy trackers sold that way, but the communication cost is usually built into the purchase price, like a pay as you go SIM with the credit already loaded, and data limits are often tight. Bluetooth tags avoid a fee by relying on passing phones. None of these is monitored 24/7, professionally installed or Thatcham accredited. The only product we fit with no subscription at all is the Meta AUTOBLOK, which is an immobiliser rather than a tracker.
Will my insurer accept a tracker without a subscription?
Not where the policy asks for a Thatcham tracker. Thatcham Research's definitions require Category S5 and Category S7 systems to be monitored 24/7 to BS 8591 Category 1 or an equivalent standard, and that monitoring is what the subscription pays for. A device with no monitoring cannot meet the definition and comes with no certificate of installation for your insurer.
What happens if I stop paying for my tracker subscription?
The tracker stops working, whatever the brand, because it can no longer communicate over the mobile network. On a combined tracker and immobiliser system the immobiliser stops too, which on a Meta Trak system means every DEADLOCK variant. Meta Trak's lifetime parts and labour warranty for the original owner applies again once the subscription is reactivated. If your insurance depends on a working tracker, a lapse can also leave you outside the policy terms.
What is the cheapest car tracker you fit?
The Meta Trak Pulsar, at £225 to fit yourself or £305 with professional installation, with its first 3 years of service included and renewal at £129.95 for a further 3 years, paid to Meta Trak. The Meta Trak Shield is from £225 supply and installation plus its first term. Both are self monitored, with no theft monitoring or recovery support. For a monitored system, the Meta Trak S7 is from £185 and the ScorpionTrack S7 is £185, both for supply and installation.
Is there any vehicle security with no ongoing fee?
Yes. The Meta AUTOBLOK is a standalone engine immobiliser at £349 supply and installation, with no subscription and a 3 year warranty. It stops the engine starting unless one of its driver recognition tags is present. It does not track the car, so it will not meet a requirement for a tracker, but it is what we recommend to anyone who wants protection with nothing to pay after fitting.
